A Lillington convenience store was rated 1 and the Holiday Inn at Tachbrook Park 2 in late-published September ratings. All 24 October ratings so far are 5.
A convenience store in Lillington has been given a food hygiene rating of 1, “major improvement necessary”. The Holiday Inn at Tachbrook Park, on the southern edge of Leamington, was rated 2, “improvement necessary”.
Both inspections took place in September. The ratings appeared on the Food Standards Agency register after our September roundup, along with three more below the top mark.
October looks very different so far. All 24 ratings published for October are 5. That will not be the final count: lower ratings tend to appear later, because businesses have 21 days to appeal before a rating is published.
All figures come from the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme register for the Warwick district authority, which covers Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth, Whitnash and the villages. We read it on 2 November.
The five below a 5
| Business | Where | Rating | Inspected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lillington Express | 4 Cromer Road, Lillington | 1 | 22 September |
| Holiday Inn Leamington Spa | Olympus Avenue, Tachbrook Park | 2 | 15 September |
| Durham Ox | 111 Shrewley Common, Shrewley | 3 | 23 September |
| Racehorse | 32-34 Stratford Road, Warwick | 4 | 16 September |
| Whittle’s at Binswood | Binswood Hall, Binswood Avenue, Leamington | 4 | 9 September |
Shrewley is about five miles north-west of Warwick.
Inspectors score three things, and the register publishes all three. A lower score is better. Here is what they found at the two lowest-rated businesses:
- Lillington Express, listed as a shop: food handling scored 20, “major improvement necessary”; management of food safety 20, “major improvement necessary”; the condition of the premises 10, “generally satisfactory”.
- Holiday Inn Leamington Spa: food handling scored 5, “good”; the premises 15, “improvement necessary”; management 10, “generally satisfactory”.
At the Holiday Inn, then, the problem the inspectors recorded was mainly the building and its facilities rather than how food was handled.
The register showed no right-to-reply statement from any of the five when we checked. A rating is a snapshot of the day of the inspection. It does not mean a business was closed, or that food was unsafe. Any business can ask for a re-inspection once it has made improvements, and we will report any new rating.
September’s full picture
With the late ratings added, the register now shows 62 inspections dated September. Fifty-four were rated 5.
The other September ratings below 5 were in our earlier roundup: Pizza O’More Finest on the Queensway Trading Estate (2), The Oak at Baginton (3) and the Rose and Crown in Warwick’s Market Place (4). The register still showed the same ratings for all three on 2 November.

What it means for you
- Check before you book. Every business’s rating and its three scores are on the FSA register. In England, displaying the sticker is voluntary.
- October is not finished. Ratings for inspections in the last week of October will appear through November. We will add any rating below 5 to this page.
- Businesses can reply. Any business named here can add a right-to-reply statement to the register, and we will report it.
